Gmail Priority Inbox

Gmail Priority Inbox Link

I was seeing a small link in red called "New Priority Inbox beta" from yesterday. Today I clicked it... it said, Failed to activate Priority Inbox.

After couple of tries it got activated. So, What is it ??

This new feature if it works really as advertised will be really an awesome feature for most of us. Simply to put up, it just prioritizes the mails for us. But how ? Just it does it by watching our read/sent mails and also it gives us an option to mark a mail as Important/ Unimportant.

And also there is a new mailbox view which categorize the mails as :
  1. Important and Unread  or
  2. Starred  or
  3. Everything Else

New Priority Inbox - New Mailbox View

I have subscribed to lot of newsletters starting from Techrepublic to DotNetSlackers and etc. And now Im not reading all of them or at-least not all the issues. So the quantity of the mail, then mails from Dell, HP, etc are just filling my mailbox. I dont want to unsubscribe those and also I dont want to label and archive them. I want it in my inbox. And also, sometimes, there is a possibility of missing a mail from some person due to the number of these kind of mails. So, the better way is prioritizing it. Thats what its all about !!

New Priority Inbox didnt read my old mails and its not showing any proper Important and Unread messages. May be it need sometime to loop through mails etc.. Hope it works as expected.

Multiple Inboxes for GMail on   Thursday, March 12, 2009

 Multiple Inboxes for GMail

Multiple Inboxes for GMail

Last month Gmail Team announced a new GMail Lab feature called Multiple Inboxes. I really thought its about having Multiple Inboxes. Its not so. It wont allow you to see multiple Inboxes at the sametime. Its just a Multi-view or Multi-pane view of messages in some order or pattern. ie., You can create a view and define that to display all the mails labeled something, or from some account etc.

I have five accounts in Gmail (my old Gmail Id, other 3 ids for three different reasons created in the Google Apps - Kiruthik.com account). All the four are forwarded to the id mail-at-kiruthik.com. So mails from those account would reach this mail@kiruthik inbox.

Clicking the Details link next to the Last account activity line at the bottom of any Gmail page shows information about recent activity in your mail.

Gmail s’ Last Account activity

Recent activity includes any times that your mail was accessed, using a regular web browser, through a POP client, from a mobile device, etc. We'll list the IP address from which the access was made, as well as the time and date.

Its shows the last 5 sessions

Microsoft s Offer to Yahoo on   Saturday, February 02, 2008

Microsoft's Offer to Yahoo

Microsoft has offered to buy Yahoo for $44.6bn in cash and/or shares. "We dont have any other option" must be the answer from Bill Gates in Microsoft's Board of Directors meeting. They are offering nearly 62% more from Yahoo 's Thursday(31-Jan-2008) closing price. Just see the graph below plotted against Microsoft, Yahoo, Google and Dow Jones, Nasdaq for the past 5 years.

Google Vs Microsoft Vs Yahoo & NASDAQ, DOW

We can very easily say that Googles' stock has increased very high than its rival(s).

Below, is the Microsoft’s letter to the board of directors at Yahoo, proposing to buy the company.

But its something similar to HP-Compaq Vs Dell - Though its not so equal in any means though. But the deal might workout like that.

Now Google Talk (GTalk) in Gmail on   Saturday, February 11, 2006

Google Talk in Gmail

Few days before, Google announced its Google Talk integration with Gmail, and now its ready to use. This is a nice idea of integrating Gmail & Google Talk called Chat. Also, it will be good in places like office where messengers are not allowed. Nice UI as well.

New column like Quick Contacts showing friends who are online in Google Talk

New column like Quick Contacts showing friends who are online in Google Talk

When we click on the contacts, it will open a small frame to start conversation. Or, if you move the mouse over it, it will just open that contacts' detail.

GTalk Window for Chat

A small window like frame with two buttons in the bottom

Go off the record will not save the conversation, and I think its not necessary to say about Block senthil <user>. The pop-out is to make the window a new page, without disturbing the current one.

New message in Google Talk in Gmail will have a Orange colored frame Head

The new message is placed with a Orange color head.

Also, when we opt to save the history it is getting saved immediately. You can see it there in the above image.

Minimized Chat Window within the Gmail Page

Minimized Chat Window within the Gmail Page

We can minimize the chat window like what we can do in Meebo, e-messenger.net the web based messenger alternatives.

Cute, light weight smiles and small icons.

We can expect both MSN & Yahoo 's new webmail based in AJAX to have the similar feature.

Now search giant Google offers a new service in Gmail, which will help us to view the Chat(text) conversations inside Gmail.

New Feature Chat, added in Gmail which stores the Chat Conversations

The chat logs can be viewed & searched, like emails and also it can be sent as email. Even we can move the message to Inbox, we can add a star etc. This new feature of google has to be enabled to before use.

Chat History can be saved in Gmail. It has to be enabled before using.

So I enabled it few hours before and tried to archive it. Its cool :-)

Archived Chat conversations of Google Talk (GTalk) in Gmail

In my Google Talk (gmail) account, Im connected to very few people, & hence im not using it often. But I can say that its very simple & low resource hungry application when we compare it with Yahoo Messenger & Hotmail.

I used to save all the Chat conversation in Yahoo. The main difference between both is : In google, the chat conversations are stored in Gmail Account, and in Yahoo it is stored in the PC where you are using the Messenger. So, we have to enable archiving in Yahoo each time we re-install the messenger / we loggin in different machine. Also in Yahoo its is saved in Profiles folder in Yahoo installed directory with a .dat extension and its encrypted. The best about Yahoo is you can send offline message, but not in Google.

Update : Now Google Talk supports Offline messaging, which is also saved in the Gmail.

Google Analytics, a good resource for all on   Monday, November 14, 2005

Google Analytics Logo

People who have access to their raw logs can use Awstats, Webtrends or Webalizer etc, to get a better view of their websites visitors statistics. Hopefully who don't have access to the logs, may use the free service from Stat CounterShiny Stats etc., But this is something interesting from Google, thats  Google Analytics, as usual a free service.  So this can be a very good alternative, mainly for people, who blog in blogspot, or Live journal.

About Google Analytics, the installation is very simple & its just the 5 lines of code to add in your page. I have installed it now, may be tomorrow morning (12 hours later), I hope to get access to my reports!!!  The reports are grouped for three types of people :  Executives, Webmasters and Marketing Officials.

Im waiting for the report. Soon, I will update this with the snopshots. :-)

Update : Nothing special happened in Google's Analytics report. I don't know how long I have to wait. Its like, they have registered the  domain Google-Analytics.com more than 4 months back ;-)

Google Earth on   Wednesday, June 29, 2005

After a month, MSN announced its Virtual Earth, the search engine giant released its own version called, Google Earth ( beta ), which is a advancement of Google 's Mapping (KEYHOLE), which allow users to search for a location to get an aerial view of that place.

Google Earth Loading image

Like MSN Virtual Earth, Google also offers many features like satellite view,..... It lists Banks/ATMs, Schools, Movie Rentals, Hospitals, Churches, Restaurant, Airports etc., Its a 100% GIS Application, but the images will not be a map, but it will be of Aerial & 3D view. I clicked, Hard Times, a movie rental Shoppe, and it showed the address.

  Google Earth, SnapShot

Like we bookmark web pages in a browser, we can also bookmark a place. And if you search for a address, it will find the area exactly, and shows the image with the Latitude & Longitude points. Like GIS applications, they split the area with the same Layer concept. For e.g.., I selected Shopping centers in the layer, in few seconds, it showed many shopping centers with a $ symbol. Likewise I tried lodging & banks.

Google Earth, SnapShot

It comes in 4 editions, but as of now, the free one is not available for download. And if you are that much interested, then go for Google Earth Pro Trial, which is available for download.

Edition Pricing in $ (Annually)
Google Earth Free
Google Earth Plus 20
Google Earth Pro 400
Google Earth Enterprise NA

NA - Not Available
